The Journey in each MEMDT Student’s Development

MEM Dance Theatre’s teaching philosophy is to provide guidance to each family and student in learning about the Arts in a fun, rewarding and safe experience. The intent is to create a path for personal and artistic success; whether a student aspires to enjoy a Recreational or Pre-Professional curriculum in the dance/theatre arts or as a member of our Dance Company.

At the beginning of each school year, a student’s plan is refreshed to ensure one’s aspirations are consistent with the classes registered for; which are centered on developing skills and other aptitudes that build a foundation as a student matures. In each of the three age-based stages of development, the intended outcomes are for students to become more self-assured and focused on where their interests lie; with a thirst for knowledge, curiosity, and desire to improve.

Students are also mentored in how best to present themselves as they progress in their training and when applying for assistantships, internships, summer intensives, and college admission. For over 40 years MEMDT has been founded on established and proven best practices taught by a caring and experienced faculty; dedicated to appreciating and supporting the differences and gifts we share in the Friendships and Relationships cultivated along the way.

The Nutcracker

Every year we stage performances of The Nutcracker Ballet at the Stratos G. Dukakis Performing Arts Center at Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School in Fitchburg. There are 4 performances: 2 children’s school performances and 2 public performances. Our 90-minute Nutcracker Ballet is unlike most others and is produced to be a special treat for children and the “young at heart.” Be transported from your home into the Land of the Snowflakes and on a journey to the Kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy where fabulous entertainment awaits!

MEM Dance Company

Dancers are exposed to different styles of choreography and music, gain experience of performing in different venues for various audiences and judges, and are able to bond and create friendships not only with their team members but also with dancers from other studios.

Sharing The Arts Together

We wanted to expand our repertory of performances at MEMDT and have our students experience all forms of dance and theatre from well-known Ballets, Broadway shows and Dance in Film. Every March we are holding this special show which showcases our MEM Dance Company, guest performers from all over Massachusetts, and an excerpt from a classical ballet! This past year we presented the third act of Sleeping Beauty!

Experience MEM Dance Theatre

Each June, MEMDT holds an annual performance to showcase our students’ progress throughout the year. MEMDT has three recitals: two Matinees performances for our youngest dancers and an Evening performance for our intermediate and advanced dancers.

Our Classes

  • Acro is a style of dance that combines a variety of dance styles with precision acrobatic elements such as contortion, inversion balances and tumbling. It teaches flexibility, balance, strength, muscle control, discipline and focus. Junior students will start learning skills such as forward and backward rolls, backbends, handstands and cartwheels. Intermediate and Advanced students will learn to combine all of their balance and skills into intricate sequences with more advanced tumbling. Junior Level Acro students will perform in a June Matinee Recital. Intermediate Level Acro students will perform in the June Evening recitals. Advanced Level Acro is offered as a technique class only with no recital performance.

  • The theatre program at MEMDT runs year-round, offering acting instruction, drama workshops, and performance opportunities. September thru June we offer Acting I for the younger student and Acting II for the older student. Each summer we also offer three 2-week “Summer Spotlight Theatre” camps for 7-14 year olds who are interested in all aspects of performing including: singing, dancing, acting, and more.

  • Ballet is the foundation of all dance. Body placement, flexibility, balance, alignment, strength and technique are methodically developed thru barre and center floor work. PMD offers exceptional ballet training from beginner thru advanced pre-professional levels. Ballet class is required for all students with the exception of Acro, Acting and Hip Hop only. Please read class levels for ballet class requirements. Classes described as ballet technique will not perform in the June Recitals.
